Benefits of PRP Injections/Therapy

1) PRP therapy uses your own blood

PRP is a blood product that contains a high concentration of platelets. We create PRP for your treatment from a sample of your own blood. Because we use your blood for PRP therapy, there’s a very low risk of side effects from treatment. Corticosteroid injections are a common treatment for chronic knee pain and shoulder pain conditions. However, these injections may provide only temporary relief, and their long-term use may cause permanent tissue damage. PRP therapy is an alternative pain management treatment that may ease pain without such complications.

2) PRP therapy supports the healing process

Platelets are tiny blood cells that play a major role in the body’s repair process. With PRP therapy, we inject a high concentration of platelets into areas where there’s a delay in healing. The platelets in the PRP stimulate the healing process in the nonhealing tissue, increasing cellular activity and the generation of new cells and tissue.

3) PRP therapy reduces inflammation

Inflammation is part of your body’s repair process. The initial inflammation that occurs from an injury starts the body’s healing cascade (the steps that tissue repair and regeneration). Platelets have both pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators. When we inject the PRP into the damaged part of your body, you can expect an initial increase in inflammation and swelling. However, you should experience improvements in inflammation over time as the damage heals.

4) PRP therapy is a natural approach to pain relief

By reducing inflammation and supporting the healing process, PRP naturally reduces pain. And by boosting healing at the source of your pain, you may have long-term relief from your discomfort.

5) PRP treatment is quick

We provide PRP therapy at the office. We start by taking a sample of blood to make your PRP solution and then preparing the site of your injection by cleaning the skin with an antiseptic agent and injecting a local anesthetic to minimize pain.

PRP Background

Your body has inherent healing and regenerative properties that are activated after sustaining an injury. A well-organized sequence of events uses chemical signals transported through the bloodstream to orchestrate a healing response. Signaling molecules such as growth factors facilitate communication between cells. They are present in large numbers within blood component molecules called platelets. Platelets come from bone marrow and circulate throughout the bloodstream in a non-activated form. Once they detect an injured tissue, platelets become activated, collecting at the site of injury and changing their shape to release their contained signaling molecules. By concentrating platelets from the blood and introducing them to a specific area, we can stimulate the body’s natural healing properties.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Your body contains natural healing capabilities which can be harnessed by isolating targeted components from your blood. Platelets are present in large numbers within the bloodstream. Once injured tissue is detected, they become activated and collect at the site of injury to release their signaling molecules. By concentrating platelets from the blood and introducing them to a specific area, we can stimulate the body’s natural healing response. “Made From You For You!”

Platelets are key factors in hard and soft tissue repair mechanisms. Platelets are responsible for clotting and involved in tissue healing. They secrete active molecules called growth factors which stimulate the natural repair mechanisms for damaged tissues. They provide the essential growth factors FGF, PDGF, TGF-B, EGF, VEGF, and IGF that are involved in stem cell migration, differentiation and proliferation. The stimulation of fibroblasts and endothelial cells induces new extracellular matrix deposition and neo-vascularization.

Plasma is essential for cell survival as it contains nutrients, vitamins, hormones, electrolytes and proteins. Proteins are key molecules for the coagulation process and the formation of the fibrin polymer that will serve as a scaffold for cell migration, differentiation and proliferation.

How is PRP Prepared?

Platelet-rich plasma is prepared by drawing a small volume of your blood and concentrating platelets in a small volume of plasma, while removing undesirable components. Concentrated platelets can help to enhance the cellular signals which are essential for repair of injured tissues.

What are the associated risks?

Regen® platelet-rich plasma is autologous, which means that the patient is the recipient and also the donor. There is minimal risk of an allergic reaction (citrate hypersensitivity) and severe adverse events are uncommon. Your physician can provide further details about potential risks associated with the treatment.

Why would I need a PRP Injection?

Platelet-Rich Plasma for Sports Medicine Injuries

PRP can help promote healing in those with a sports or activity-related injury. PRP can reduce recovery times for non-surgical injuries such as tennis elbow or tendonitis of the knee. PRP injections can also benefit people with tendon or soft tissue injuries who would like to avoid surgery. When surgery is necessary, PRP given at the time of the procedure can help reduce recovery times and promote faster healing.

PRP injection is used most often with sports medicine injuries related to the:

  • Achilles Tendon
  • Anterior cruciate ligament
  • Hamstring
  • Lateral/medial epicondyle (common extensor and flexor tendon)
  • Patellar tendon
  • Cartilage

Platelet-Rich Plasma for Joint Pain

PRP can be beneficial for people with arthritis or pain in major joints. PRP injections can help alleviate discomfort and improve function. People who aren’t yet ready for a hip, knee, or shoulder replacement are often good candidates for PRP injection.

PRP injection is used most often with the following joints:

  • Carpometacarpal (thumb)
  • Glenohumeral (shoulder)
  • Hip
  • Knee

What is it like to have a platelet-rich plasma injection?

PRP can be administered in the doctor’s office. The doctor will draw your blood, spin it in the centrifuge to prepare the PRP, then inject the PRP directly into the site of your injury. The injection may be done with ultrasound guidance. The entire process should take less than an hour. You may need to rest following the procedure. It’s important to follow the doctor’s instructions on how quickly to return to sports or other activities to ensure optimal recovery. Because nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin, can impair platelet function, you may be advised to stop taking them for two weeks in advance of a PRP treatment. You may need to come back for additional PRP treatments, or your doctor may provide PRP in conjunction with other treatments, such as physical therapy or other medications.

How do I know if PRP Therapy is right for me?

Pain affects daily activities.

Physical therapy has not adequately improved function and reduced pain.

Other non-surgical treatments have failed or been eliminated.

The patient is sensitive to anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen; finds medications do not provide adequate pain relief; or wants to avoid long-term use of medications.

Surgical treatment is not optional or not desired.

PRP Injections are an effective and safe treatment option for many conditions and injuries. It is used to treat everything from chronic tendon and ligament injuries to arthritis. It is also used to promote the healing of soft tissue injuries and to speed up the healing of surgical wounds. It can also be used to reverse signs of aging on the face, and dark circles under the eyes, and to improve hair growth.

Platelet-rich plasma injections may not be appropriate for a patient who:

  • Has a medical condition that could worsen or spread with injections, such as an active infection, a metastatic disease, or certain skin diseases.
  • Has certain blood and bleeding disorders.
  • Is undergoing anticoagulation therapy (and cannot temporarily suspend treatment).
  • Is anemic.
  • Is pregnant.
